Will Brian Williams Continue to give us the Nightly News?
Brian Williams has been the lead anchor on
NBC Nightly News since 2004.
Summary: In the article “Brian Williams, Under Scrutiny, Will Take Leave From ‘NBC Nightly News” Written on February 7th, 2015. NBC told Williams that he was bringing negative attention to the network so he has been placed under temporary leave. On Wednesday last week, WIlliams apologized for an error he made while reporting. The story he told was that he was in a lead helicopter on assignment in a lead helicopter that gunfire and took RPG fire. When in actuality, he was in a tailing helicopter and saw the other one take fire. It also mentioned that it could take a toll on NBC News as a whole.

Analysis: I agree with what NBC is doing not only because of its publicity, but because of Williams lying for 12 years. Since it was the first US invasion in 12 years, it might have made Williams get caught up in the moment and lie with all the chaos going around him. War maybe a way to get people to tune in, but not if you are lying. I also think that Regardless of what NBC does, they will lose viewers because of it and people will tune into either ABC News or CBS News.
Discussion questions:
Do you think Brian Williams will continue to report the nightly news?
Did NBC take appropriate action or should they have taken more/ less.

I think that Brian Williams will continue to report on NBC Nightly News because of how popular he is and that maybe he wasn't lying but just messed up on live television. I also think that it could possibly not even be his fault since news anchors just read off a tele-prompter (screen that shows the words of what the anchor is supposed to say so that they actually don't describe the stories themselves).
ReplyDeleteI think you're analysis is right, with such a public and widely seen news source, I doubt NBC would like to keep a infamous reporter with a scandal tied to him. They will face backlash as the face of their news as turned them into a untrusted network in the face of the public. Brian Williams knew what he was doing at the time, and could have fixed it sometime during these long, twelve years.
