Is Flying Becoming too Dangerous

In the picture the plane’s wing hits the bridge to slow the plane right before impact with the river below.

Summary: In the article “Taiwan Plane Crash: TransAsia Flight Loses Control, Plunges Into River” published by the Wall Street Journal on February 4th, 2015 we discovered that yet another airplane crash has taken place. This is something that has turned heads because this is not the first crash recently. Unfortunately there have been multiple plane crashes in the last couple of months. Most unfortunately involving a lot of death. The author argues that one reason we are seeing an increase in crashes especially with Asian flights is because of the quick increase in demand of pilots. The author says that we are seeing a lot of strain on pilots which is also creating risks such as inexperienced pilots flying planes. The main idea of this article is to report on the crash that occurred yesterday. After reporting it then the article explained why that we are seeing more planes going down more often.

Analysis: I agree with the author in his claim that too many pilots are being certified before they are truly ready. While there is a clear demand for pilots in Asia they have to figure out a better way to obtain pilots rather than straining them in training and hoping that the don't make a mistake. Killing your customers is not a good way to do business. If they do not address the situation and more planes end up crashing they will see a dramatic drop in their customers. Flying is supposed to be a very safe way to travel, however if it becomes dangerous people will stop buying from Transasia. This article reminded me of the last Transasia plane crash which was only seven months ago. I feel that the top priority of the airlines should be their customers no matter how high the demand is. Even if they lose some profit they cannot have planes crashing.

Discussion Questions: Do you agree or disagree that because of demand it is okay for the pilots to be rushed through training a little more than usual?

What do you think the airlines could do in order to keep their pilots in training stress free while keeping the demand of flyers happy

  1. Very interesting artcle because this had become such a huge deal lately, and lots of planes have been disappearing/crashing causing a lot of controversy and worry across the world. I think that the pilots should not be able to become pilots with little to or no prior experience because people are giving them their lives when they get into a plane, and no one really knows how good or bad the pilot may be that happens to be flying them wherever they go. Although the demand for pilots may be going up, this doesnt mean airlines should hire bad quality pilots or even pilots that arent expeirenced.

  2. I disagree that pilots should be rushed through training because of the demand of pilots needed. For every pilot rushed through training, the risk of crashing increasing because of they haven't experienced flying with control, and have some knowledge how to fly properly. Also, because of newer pilots crashing, airlines might lose customers who fear for their lives. This would cost the airlines to lose money due to lack of customers, and would be detrimental to them. It would be better to have a pilot go through training without being rushed because it would be far safer for one, and wouldn't cost the airlines a lot of money to replace the plane they lost, and to get their costumers.

  3. I think it is interesting that so many planes have gone down and have had so many problems. Because the demand for flying is so high and there has been so many problems, I think they should prioritize safety on flights and make sure that pilots are more experienced before they can take passengers. I agree that this is bad for the company because people will not want to fly on this airline because they worried about what might happen. I think this will be bad for the whole airline industry in general because of so many recent crashes.
