Scientists believe to have found life on one of Jupiters moons, Europa. Europe is believed to have a large water ocean under its icy surface. NASA is finally getting the funding it needs for many of its missions, and if all goes as planned, NASA will be able to start planning an uncrewed exploration mission to Europa next year. Europa is believed to have an iron core, covered by rock similar to the rock that makes up Earths surface, but since it is roughly 484 million miles away from the Sun, its is, on average, -260 degrees Fahrenheit. Its surface is made up of ultra-cold ice, but scientists think theres is a liquid ocean underneath that ice. NASA plans to send a probe to Europa in 2025, which might not necessarily tell is Europa has life, but will help answer many questions about life on other planetary bodies.
Within the past few months, NASA hasfound a few different planets ad moons with potential to carry life. Considering the Population of Earth is growing every year, we must find a place where we can inhabit human life, or reduce the growing population. NASA's recent hypothesis of life on Europa is important, because this could possibly mean another place when the human race can build, as well as prosper. The author of the article, Joseph Stromberg, makes it clear we might not be alone in the solar system, and there are high hopes for the mission to Europ to take flight in 2025.
Where does NASA get the funding for most of it's missions? i.e: Where does Obama get his money to help fund NASA?
Would utilitarians find that funding NASA to find habitable planets be effective in order to maximize the human race? Would they find the expendatures of the mission to Europa meaningless, considering we do not know for sure that there is life?

I find it interesting that we are spending money to find a new place to live after we destroy this planet, instead of using that money to maybe help make our planet better again. Does the article say anything about that? And how would we live on this planet?
ReplyDeleteThis is so scary and interesting to think about. I have read a couple articles on Europa, and it is really cool to hear that they are now making an initiative to see what is going on. After seeing the movie Interstellar the fact that we might now be alone and that we could live somewhere else is incredible. I read and article on Europa that says exactly what yours said, that there is this ocean underneath the surface that was also found to have some type of living organism underneath. It is great to hear that Obama is funding this and taking the next step to discover what else is out there in our solar system.
