Should the people of America be able to carry concealed firearms in the public without a permit?

Description:

As we all know, Chicago is at times not the safest place to live. Violence is Chicago’s problem and it can't be avoided. Try turning on the NBC News and not hearing about a shooting that has happened in the last 24 hours. Gun violence is the particular kind of violence that creates the numerous stories on the news channels. Now states are making it LEGAL to carry a concealed gun in public without a permit. This new law has caused conflict with the second amendment: the right to bear arms. In other words, this means that people have the right to carry a weapon.

Analysis:

In a very recent publishing by the Christian Science Monitor on February 15th, poises a frequently asked question when allowing individuals to carry a weapon without a permit: Will crime go up or down? People want to carry a firearm so that they have the choice as to whether or not they want to protect themselves with a gun. The article points out that 75% of households currently own a gun.

One point that they did not analyze was how crime figures would be affected by additional gun ownership by citizens. Some people point out that crime should go down because random violence would be reduced. While others state that crime will go up because there will be more guns in the community.

Questions:

  • How will the crime change, as more people own guns?
  • Will more people die in general?
  • Will guns start to be more common? (As if they were a pocket knife)
  • In all 50 states, can you carry a concealed gun?
  • Are there going to be stricter limitations for people with mental disabilities or criminal backgrounds?

  1. One thing to consider is that if no one had a gun, no one would get shot, and that would be nice. Does the article say anything to that nature? Would people still need a permit to own a gun?

  2. It's crazy to think that our government would let individuals outside of the military/police forces own a concealed weapon. Opening this law up would scare the public into going outside because no one would know if the person walking next to them has a weapon in their pocket. I definitely do not agree with this law and it shouldn't be opened up because it'll cause way more deaths and injuries than prevention of them. For example, if someone has a grudge against another person and now has a legal weapon, who knows what would happen.

  3. I feel that the ownership and transportation of guns is not the issue, its the knowledge and responsibility to use them safely that is the issue.

  4. In my opinion, the amount of people who own guns will increase over time. Like you said, Chicago is by no means a safe place and that mentality can be seen in other cities such as Detroit and New York City. Another possible reason for this increase the rise in crime over the years

  5. I agree with you that guns are a huge issue. However, I do think they should be allowed. Some people need them for survival. I think to avoid problems in cities and shootings the government should do screenings and background checks in order to have a gun.
