What are the advantages and disadvantages of animal cruelty in meat produce?
The reason I have chosen this topic is because its very important to me. I have been a vegetarian for four years and animal cruelty is one of the biggest issues in our society in my opinion. I believe one species shouldn’t have to suffer to make another happy. Mass producing of meat in fast food restaurants, such as mcdonalds and burger king, has taken over many different morals. Its cheaper and faster to hurt animals and make them suffer to create more meat, therefore creating more business. But is this fair? Is there a utilitarianism in this?
I will watch TV shows on the food channel that investigate the production process of fast food. I will research animal treatment methods eg. battery hens and slaughterhouses. I will look at the incomes of all levels of workers in fast food companies. From the CEO to the cashiers and see how much many there is left over, if if there is any. I would also like to interview regular people and find out if they know exactly where their meat is coming from, and how it got from the animal into their mouths.
The final question I plan to investigate is “is there a fair balance in efficiency of creating meat and animal treatment? Or will there always be disadvantages?” I will need to figure out how different companies treat animals, how much meat they produce every day, every month, every year. What are the opportunity costs of treating animals fairly? Will their business’ suffer from different treatment? These should all help me find an accurate conclusion.
