Colleges are providing majors to fit careers that become popular each year. This list might definitely shock you..

According to a U.S. News a leading magazine on careers & business news, there are some majors that are more popular than others.

1. Biomedical Engineering; strange to think but due to this new age where medicine and science is colliding, we need people to fill roles. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates this field will see over a 62% growth in jobs by the year 2020. 
2. Biometrics, or the study of how to build automated identification devices (facial recognition software). This industry is expected to grow to over $363 million by 2018, according to a New York based Transparency Market Research.
3. Forensic Science, where students learn how to use technology to analyze evidence; normally we see these people on CSI. Due to technology evolving, they need individuals who can prevent and investigate crimes using updated equipment.
4. Computer Game Design, where individuals need to know how to animate, audio design, program, and produce all types of media. The global market, according to a San Diego based market research company, is expected to reach $82 billion before 2018. 
5. Cybersecurity, where major companies need individuals to protect their computer systems. Between 2014 and 2016, the Pentagon plans to add 4,000 experts to its Cyber Command. 
6. Data Science, which includes math, statistics, and computer science. Computerized data is doubling every two years, so companies definitely need individual filling jobs, according to the International Data Corporation. 
7. Business Analytics, where individuals would need to examine business performance. Courses would focus on computer software, and communication skills. 
8. Petroleum Engineering provided a new technology which has created access to shake formations. To tap these reserves, companies need people to fill the roles. 
9. Public Health has become popular due to global epidemics and the increase in health reform. Students can focus on science, statistics, even find work in hospitals or nonprofits! 
10. Robotics, where between 2 million and 3.3 million jobs will be created in just 8 years. The field is drawing on aspects of computer science, all types of engineering, and even psychology. 
11. Sustainability, due to the increase in environmental awareness. Companies and organizations are looking for ways to improve efficiency and decrease waste and pollution.

I didn't expect these careers at all. Business has always been popular because our economy requires business to survive. I understand why the majority of these careers on this list include technology because that's how everything works nowadays; companies need technology to run businesses and control operations. It seems to me that if you have a strong background working with technology, even if you know how to work a computer, you'll have a great chance of working in one of these careers. 

RESEARCH PLAN: I plan on interviewing my mom and her colleagues next to see how they decided on a career to work in higher education. I'll ask them how students that they work with decide on careers.
