Breaking Ground on the Nicaragua Canal

Summary

New Yorker reporter Jon Lee Anderson travels to Nicaragua to record the beginning of the construction of what will eventually become the Nicaragua Canal. In the article, he describes the overall plan of building the canal, the relationship between the Hong Kong group known as HKND and the Nicaraguan people, and has a brief conversation with some of the construction workers.

Analysis

Construction on the Nicaragua Canal began this December, and it's set to be the biggest engineering the world has ever seen. If it succeeds, then it will bring great prosperity to the now struggling region, and shift the paradigm of world power away from the United States, since they won't have the monopoly that still maintain on the Panama Canal. However, there are many saying that it's impossible. The project is being funded by a Hong Kong group with a sketchy track record, which is headed by a relatively unknown Chinese billionaire. Even if the funds don't dry up, the environmental impact will be devastating.

Discussion Questions

1) Do you think that this project is feasible? What could the cost, or some possible risks?

2) If it is feasible, what are some benefits that the world would experience? What are some drawbacks?
