Power Play: Are alternative fuel vehicles better than gas?

Brief Explanation of why I'm interested in this topic:
Alternative-fuel vehicles like the battery-powered electric cars made by Tesla, Chevrolet, and Nissan have been the source of significant news coverage over the past few years, and the recent unveiling of hydrogen fuel cell powered cars has added a new layer to the issue. Mainstream electric cars are relatively new but have already made significant advances, shown great promise, and have been projected to have applications outside of just driving from point
 A to point B.
Overall question I plan to answer:
Are alternative-fuel vehicles (electric, fuel cell, ethanol/biodiesel) going to ever replace internal combustion engines?
Sub Questions:
Mostly I’ll need to assess the merits and characteristics of alternative fuel vehicles and compare them to conventional internal combustion-powered vehicles. I’ll need to look at price, efficiency, accessibility, performance, safety, environmental impact, and other factors that anyone would look at when deciding what car to buy. The parallels to buying an alternative fuel vehicle are important, because a huge determinant of the success of alternative fuel vehicles will be not just how good they are but how willing consumers are to purchase them.
Plan of Research:
I’ll need to review statistics on electric vehicles, and comparisons to conventional vehicles. Thankfully, this is a widely discussed current event, so there will be lots of news articles coming out throughout this project for me to use.
