Passion Project: How does our clothing and the fashion industry shape how we are viewed?

· Blog Post #1
Passion Project

What is your label?
Allie Hetke

Briefly explain why you are interested in stuying your topic:

I am interested in this topic because I believe that nowadays it is so hard to wear what you want without having a label put on it. The label may not always be seen as positive but actually, the exact opposite. We are being judge, now, more than ever, about what we wear. The fashion industry tries to get use to believe that we need to be in trend every year, making us afraid to venture out of our comfort zones. Sometime when I have worn something, people will think I am trying to be like someone, and might label me for what I am wearing. It is an issue that I believe everyone of all different age groups come face-to-face with. We believe we have to dress a way to be accepted. Whether you are someone who gravitates towards Hot Topic, J Crew, Urban Outfitter, etc., there is always a way that you will be labeled by what you choose to wear.

·      The overall question I plan on answering by the end of the project:

How does our clothing and the fashion industry shape how we’re viewed?
Why are we viewed differently by what we wear/where we shop?

·      Sub questions I will need to answer in order to answer the overall question:

What makes new styles popular?
What makes us want to follow these trends?
Why are some clothing stores losing customers, and what stores are these?
What are the perecentage differences in income at certain store seasonally? Do some sotres have more income and customers during a certain season?
How are we viewed differently?
Are we viewed differently personality-wise as well?
What causes a trend/how are trends created/how do they grab our attention?

·      My plan of research (what specific Library Databases, specific websites, names of authors, people, etc. will I pursue to find answers to the questions above):

Databases:
ProQuest
Opposing ViewPoint in Context
Global Issues in Context
Country Reports

Websites:
Fashion magazine websites/ magazines themselves
Blogs
Newspaper website, fashion section, social media sites

Interviews with friends on their personal style, and maybe on how they have been labeled clothing wise/their views on trends
research interviews with fashion icons
