Man's death leads to discovery of new virus in Kansas, CDC reports
By : Ralph Ellis, CNN
(http://www.cnn.com/us)In an article by Ralph Ellis, he talks about a new virus that was discovered by a man’s death. In Kansas this summer, a patient came in with symptoms of Lyme disease. Lyme disease is an illness spread by ticks. He was hospitalized and then died of a heart attack 11 days later. The CDC tested his blood and discovered that a new virus was found. This virus is called the Bourbon Virus and is most likely spread by insects and ticks. This type of virus is related to virus’ that were found in ticks and insects in different continents. It is the first time this virus has been found in the US.
I think that is interesting that diseases are spreading abroad. It just shows how easy can be to become contaminated. I also find it fascinating the this is the only case they have found. I wonder if people have had it before, but thought it was Lyme disease. I believe that the government should invest into disease control so we can get rid of this terrible problem. I also think that informing the public about what to wear outside would be a good idea. This way people be prevent ticks and therefore not get sick.
- Do you think that if this becomes a huge issue that they will be able to find a cure?
2. Do you think, knowing that you people can catch the Bourbon Virus , people will be more preventative against ticks and insects?

This sounds really interesting and scary. I hope this virus doesn't spread rapidly and cause panic in the U.S.
ReplyDeleteI think because there has only been one death, people will not be alarmed by ticks and won't do much to try and prevent getting them. It isn't a huge threat and people won't feel extremely at risk for it. Unlike the Swine Flu and Ebola scares, unless you have gone out hiking in the woods or live in an area where ticks are very prevalent, people are not going to go out of there way to make big changes to avoid them. I think the problem won't get fixed until there is a bigger risk for them.
ReplyDeleteI don't really think people will start taking preventative measures against this virus even if they know that there is a chance they could get it. Only 1 person in the U.S has gotten this virus so I don't believe it is a big deal at all and people should not start freaking out about it. If it starts to spread and become a bigger problem then i think people should start taking preventative measures.
ReplyDeleteThat is really cool! I feel that they should be able to find a cure but that is gross. Very nice article Nina!!
ReplyDeleteI don't believe that people will create such a fuss about this new virus like how there was such a huge coverage on Ebola. They'll most likely find a cure soon, but if they don't it could become a problem because ticks exist everywhere. However, since it was discovered only recently, it could mean that it wasn't as dangerous before and wasn't discovered because it wasn't as serious and there were no deaths. This was the first death with the disease. They might have already found a cure for it, and I don't believe it will be a big deal like other diseases that have occurred.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that it is too much of an epidemic considering there is only been one death reported. Although precautions should be taken with this patient to make sure it doesn't spread.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting article, and I agree with you that our government should do more investing in disease control to protect the people within our nation.
ReplyDeleteI think people now will be more careful and cautious to prevent this disease. It's kind of the same thing with Ebola: everyone working in airports wanted to wear masks and use hand sanitizer, but many airports would not let their employees wear the masks of use hand sanitizer because it was "eye pollution." Likewise, the same thing could happen again with airports, considering this is the first time the disease has been found in the US. As diseases occur, I like to think that the CDC lets the disease take it's toll before they decide what to do about it. Also, since it has some of the same symptoms as Lyme disease, they will use the cures for Lyme disease, and build off of that for this disease.
