Blog Post #1: Feed the Hungry

BLOG POST #1
CATCHY TITLE: Feed the Hungry

BLOG POST BODY PARAGRAPHS:  (Broken into easy to read paragraphs, formatting font to make it easier to follow main ideas, etc.)
  • Briefly explain why you are interested in studying your topic:
I’m very interested in this topic because growing up, my family tried to say as much food as possible. During cooking classes at school, I would see how much food is thrown away during one period and I just think about how that food could have fed a couple of hungry people. If one period throws away that much food, imagine how much food is thrown away throughout the whole day...It would probably be able to feed a hungry family. This also got me thinking about how much food restaurants throw away that could be given to homeless people in the city. We say that there’s a hunger problem worldwide, but we never do anything about it. If anything, we are making it worse.

  • The overall question I plan on answering by the end of the project:
How does food waste contribute to worldwide hunger and what can be done about it?

  • Sub questions I will need to answer in order to answer the overall question:
How much food is wasted on average each day at a typical restaurant?
Do restaurants give their food to homeless?
Are there any programs that give food to the hungry besides soup kitchens?

  • My plan of research (what specific Library Databases, specific websites, names of authors, people, etc. will I pursue to find the answers to the questions above):

I will many look through ProQuest. I will also try to have interviews with restaurant owners and maybe cooking teachers here at Central. I will also look up different organizations that help feed the hungry such as stophungrynow.org and actionagainsthunger.org.
