How is music marketed?

I'm studying this because I've always loved music. I've grown up with it and it's just been one of those things that is really near and dear to my heart. I've considered having a career in it in the future and I think it's interesting how different music appeals to different reasons. There's a variety of reasons for this and I want to see how and why this is.

The questions I plan on answering are how music is marketed toward certain people and why this works/why does it appeal to certain people?

How is music marketed?
Is music advertised in different ways?
How do new artists usually get marketed?
Why does certain marketing work better than others?

I'll probably use a bunch of music websites like iTunes, YouTube, and Pandora to see how this stuff is marketed for myself. I'll also use economics sites to see the more technical side of how it's marketed. I can use databases like ProQuest, Global Issue in Context, also business sources like Fortune, NYT, Time, etc.
