A Prickly Partnership for Uber and Google

In the article ‘A Prickly Partnership for Uber and Google’ posted by Mike Isaac on Feb 8, 2015, mike explains that the on the go car service company Uber and internet titan Google are in a veritable arms race to come out on top of the convince list. After the initial partnership of the two companies, which led to Ubers rise in popularity and success, Uber announced that it would start to work on its own model of self driving vehicle, something that Google has been working on for years. This kick started the hostility between the two companies and drove them to start developing better and better services than the other one.

At the same time I respect Uber trying to make a name for itself, I feel that it is both unwise and just done in poor taste to become a rival with the company that helped create you. ‘Don’t bite the hand that feeds’ goes the old saying, and that definitely applies here. Google’s venture capital arm provided a 250 million dollar investment into the company and in return they stab them in the back. Not cool Uber… Not cool at all.

Should companies have loyalty to the companies that invest in them?
Should companies developing similar products join together?
What does Uber gain from being independant?

  1. I really think Uber and Google should join together because both are leading companies in separate fields; together they could change the internet and how we use their services. Even though it's good to have competition between major companies, just imagine the product if they worked together!

  2. The phrase "dont bite the hand that feeds" got me thinking. This is a large problem in our society. Most companies and business do not start on their own, they are a product of something bigger but eventually everyone wants to go solo and create some raw and their own. Although if you need someones help to get you to the place you are at, why wouldnt you want their help the whole way through? How does seperating from them and creating an an neemy help anything?

  3. I think that your position is completely valid. They are both extremely successful companies, with the help of Google, Uber was able to reach the level they are at. Without them there success and profit would have probably been limited. So, I think once they are able to be successful independently they should be able to part ways.

  4. I don't think companies should be completely dedicated to the groups that helped them get their start, but they definitely shouldn't flip 180 degrees and become their main competitors.
Google and Uber should definitely work together to develop self-driving cars; it'll give consumers a more advanced and consistent experience, and other car-related companies like Tesla Motors have had great success in working with competitors to develop new products.
