Are you ever curious about where and why world hunger happens?
Jim Peron tells us in The Facts about World Hunger that the number of hungry people throughout the world has grately increased in recent years. This mostly occurred in sub-Saharan Africa. The reasons are from war, drought, AIDS and trade barriers. The New York Times reported that “more than 840 million people, or 1 in 7 world-wide, went hungry” from 1999-2001. There has been improvements throughout the world, such as the rates dropping in Asia, the Pacific, Latin America, the Caribbean, and even sub-Saharan Africa. The rates have dropped between 2 to 4 percent. However, rates did go up from 8 to 10 percent in the Near East and North Africa. Hunger rates in Central Africa went up from 35 to 58 percent! This article also mentions that hunger isn’t caused by a shortage of food, it is mostly a “politically induced problem”. It is caused by “bad economic policies or armed political conflict”. Peron once again tells us that we have more than enough to feed everyone on this planet. “The problem isn’t unsustainable development or an inability to produce. It’s a problem of getting governments out of the way.”
I have answered two of my questions from my previous blog post. I learned that world hunger doesn't happen from a scarcity of food but because some nations have problems with the government, so that effects them in not being able to receive food from different parts of the world. I also learned that the most hunger is found in Central Africa. I think that it sucks that some areas on this planet are starving because of events, such as war, droughts, etc. What sucks even more is that there are still hungry people in many well developed areas. I am still wondering how we could help the ones that are closer to us.
I’m going to continue research. I am also going to create a few surveys and interview questions to ask cooking classes and teachers at school and different restaurants to see what they do with the extra food they have at the end of the day. I also recently saw a commercial on a new program where you can purchase some products from a specific company and enter to code that they give you on the back of a box and that will result in the company giving a free box of food to feed hungry children. I want to look into that program to get more information on it and see how they are making an impact.
