"Dream herb" that sharply increases dream vividness and recollection remains wildly understudied

There exists a "dream herb" - Calea Zacatechichi - that causes somebody to lucid dream if consumed relatively near bedtime. Not only that, but studies have found it increases dream recollection, vividness and frequency with a higher rate of efficacy than Diazepam.

Traditionally, this plant is used as an herbal remedy for dysentery and fever, in Mexico, to which it is native. Research on said plant is still minimal, but despite what you might think, it doesn't affect the brain the same way a hallucinogen might. It only affects you during sleep, and according to most sources, makes dreams much more vivid.

However, many avid lucid dreamers have come forth and claimed that this herb, when consumed, only increases dream clarity and recollection, and has no inherent ties with lucid dreaming.

Clearly, the only direct path to a clearer thesis about Calea T is a greater amount of research.

  3. This is a very interesting artcle. It cofnuses me how certain drugs are banned eg LCD and ecstasy, and this one is legal and they have some similar effects. What is the difference between the drugs that is ok for one to be legal but not the other?
