I always thought that we have hungry people in the world because there wasn’t enough food for everyone; I was wrong. We do have enough food for every living being on this planet; in fact, we have more than enough. So why are people still hungry?
David Holley tells us in The World; World Must Act to End Hunger that there isn’t a shortage of food, but “while some countries produce more than they need to feed their people, otheres do not, and many of these cannot afford to import enough to make up the gap.” He also tells us that even in some of the countries that do have enough food for their people, many of them still go hungry. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan gave a speech saying that by “some estimates, 24,000 people die each day from starvation or diseases made fatal by malnutrition.” He tells us that the most scarcity of food comes from the southern African region.
I think that it is so sad to think that there are still people going hungry when there is more than enough food to feed everyone. It’s even worse to think that the nations that do produce enough food for everyone living in it still has many going hungry every year. I’m still wondering why this happens and if we can do anything to help it? I know it would be a lot harder to help the hungry that live in third-world countries, but how can we help the hungry people that live in areas closer to us, even as close as downtown chicago.
I want to continue searching and finding articles about why and where we still have hungry nations. I would also like to interview different companies and people about this topic. I’m thinking that the best people to interview are the cooking teachers and students take those classes at school, and different restaurants, such as Chipotle and Jimmy Johns, etc.
