Universities Are No Help

SOURCE: http://www.poise7.com/

Are universities helping their students past the 4 years of their education?

According to the USA Today article, “Pressure builds for schools to help grads get jobs,” career counseling has been demanded by students and parents for help, yet colleges are paying less and less each year. The approach to career counseling is a response to demands from students and parents that would help graduates find a career after education ends. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, the budget of the average college career office dropped by nearly 16%, along with the average number of job-hunting workshops and internship placements. The Class of 2010 nationally, had only 42% of it’s students with a job on graduation. Gwen Appelbaum said, "The more competitive the student needs to be, the more competitive the career office needs to be,” which is true at any university.

It’s horrible to read that students at major universities aren’t getting any help from colleges, the one place that could help them in the future. Career counselling is supposed to help the students with their futures and if they can’t get anywhere after college, that’s the university’s fault. Students our age should be a little weary about after college because by then who knows what will be the state of the economy and whether businesses are hiring or not.

RESEARCH PLAN: I plan on finishing my research with finding out if parents should be involved in their child's career path or if it should be completely up to the student.
