Who already helps

Whenever I eat out with my friends and family I always think about what these restaurants do with all the leftover food they have at the end of the day. Do they throw it away? Do they give it to their employees? Do they give it to the homeless?

I visited an organization's website, Wasted Food, to see how they help the hungry with leftover food that many restaurants end up with. They revealed that “Americans waste more than 40 percent of the food we produce for consumption. That comes at an annual cost of more than $100 billion.” While many Americans continue to waste good food, the price of food and the number of hungry Americans that have nothing to eat continues to increase. To help, Wasted Food started to gather unused edible food from restaurants, supermarkets, and farms that would have been left behind and thrown away. With this excess food, they donate it to those in need. Everyone is benefiting from this; the hungry get the food they need to survive and the companies get tax benefits for donating their leftovers.

I think that this program is great! Besides having restaurants and supermarkets throwing away good food that can’t be sold anymore because it’s a day old or passed its “sell by” date, they found that donating it would be beneficial. This food is still perfectly fine and edible, it just can’t be sold anymore, but that doesn’t mean it belongs in the trash. Programs like these help save food and money. Instead of paying for food to provide at homeless shelters, restaurants and supermarkets are able to give away their leftover food without wasting any money. Programs like these are great!

My last blog post will be the answers to the surveys I’ll ask restaurants and students to take. I want to see what local restaurants and students do with their leftover food.
