If The Players Are Risking Their Lives, Then Why Are They Doing All The Work

In this HBO segment, HBO goes to multiple universities and talk to former athletes which have been injured because of their sport and play at the university. One former student that they talk with is a former football player for Penn State and had a life injury in which he cannot play football or any other sport for the rest of his life. The player also has to go to the University every week/month to be treated in which a treatment that he is paying for. Another player that they interview is a player for Illinois State University. In this story this player also was injured because of football and now can not even walk properly (needs a cane) and has trouble even just standing up. just like in the previous story this player is paying around $10,000 a year just for his treatment which the funds are coming from his pockets.

In my opinion I find both of these stories outrageous. For a player to be playing and risking his life and yet when they get injured the university won’t pay for their injuries. Also at most universities, when athletes get injured, the athletes are dropped from the university meaning that they will lose their scholarship because in the interest to the university they have no purpose now that they can’t play that sport anymore. The thing that really bothered me the most was the story about the Illinois State player who had a life changing injury and yet the university had done nothing really at all to help. One college analyst in the video also says that technically everyone in the stadium is covered if they were to be injured. So I guess the question is: Shouldn't the athletes be covered medically if they were to have an injury while playing a sport for that college.

FUTURE RESEARCH: What is my final conclusion on should college athletes be paid?
