Ever wonder what how much food students waste at Hinsdale Central?
I had a cooking class take a survey I made and here are the results.
- Do you throw away the leftover food you make in cooking class?
Yes:4/28 Sometimes: 19/28 No:5/28
- Do you ever throw away the extra food you didn’t eat from your lunch?
Yes: 7/28 Sometimes: 15/28 No: 6/28
- If yes or sometimes, could yo have easily packed up the food you threw away to take home or give to another person?
Yes: 8/22 Sometimes: 7/22 No: 7/22
- Did you know that about 3.5 million children die every year from hunger?
Yes: 15/28 No: 13/28
- Did you know that Americans waste about 40% of food produced for consumption?
Yes: 12/28 No: 16/28
- List the food with it’s amount that you threw away yesterday that could have been saved:
There were thing written down such as 2 meatballs, portillo’s cake, baked potato, and a ¼ bag of chips. The most food I saw wasted that was written down was half a sandwich… 15 people wrote “none”.
- When you are eating out at a restaurant, do you:
Throw away extra food: 2/28 Pack it up to take home: 26/28
One of the cooking teachers told me that the school gives the leftover ingredients to a food pantry at the end of the year.
I honestly thought that the numbers of food waste was going to be higher. It was realistic that more people know that kids die every year from going hungry but less people realized that American’s waste 40% of food produced. 8 people realize that there is a better place for their leftover food than the trash but still choice to throw their food away.
