According to this list, these are the top 10 countries highest in rape crimes (disclaimer:results and website are not entirely accurate due to the extreme lack of reporting on this subject):
- United States. One is six women are raped, one in 33 men are raped. Only 16% are assumed reported.
- South Africa. 25% of men openly admit to raping one or more people
- Sweden. One and four women have been or will be a rape victim.
- India. Reported rape every 22 minutes
- United Kingdom. Over 400,000 women sexually assaulted each year. 85,000 reported rapes each year
- Germay .6,507,394 reported rapes total.
- France. 3,771,850 reported rapes total. It is assumed this is only 10% of total rapes
- Canada. 2,516,918 reported rapes total. It is assumed this is only 6% of the total rapes
- Sri Lanka. 14.5% of men openly admit to having raped one or more people
- Ethiopia. 60% of were subjected to sexual violence.
There are a lot of European nations on there. And at first glance, I though, Wow, we should really ask Africa what they're doing, and what Asia is doing to be barely listed on this list. It didn't really make sense to me, because I assumed that Asia would be really high up on the list, just because of what I've seen on the news and read about online.
But it hit me. The US has the "highest rape crimes" but they also have the highest reporting rate. 16% is nothing to be proud of, but it's way better than Canada's 6%. So maybe the countries that didn't make the list are hiding in the background, because rape is so rarely reported.
I went to find out more from Nicholas Kristof, a New York Times journalist who has become extensively involved in looking into what happens to women in under developed nations. And it's really sad. I have read his book before, but I never realized this: forced prostitution is overwhelmingly common in countries such as Nepal, India, Pakistan, and Iran. Every time one of the prostitutes is forced to have sex, it is rape. And how many so called "clients" do they see daily? But none of these rapes are reported. If each of those were reported, I would assume they would be higher on the list than every country that's already on there. I assume we would have a completely different list. But there is no way of knowing, because it is all so secretive.
Getting back to run of the mill rape, Kristof says that in Sao Paulo (Brazil) a rape occurs every 15 seconds. That's only one tiny portion of Brazil. To me it's unbelivable it can be that high. But it's sad to me also that they can have that many reports, because rape everywhere is a very unreported crime. In Afghanistan a woman can be sent to jail for being raped. No wonder their reporting rate is so low!
This leads me to sit in a state of the utmost helplessness. How do we fix what we can't see? How do we help women who are punished twice when they did nothing wrong? And how do we change the world wide attitude that women are objects to be used and abused and then thrown away?
